Overview

Experience the rugged beauty and solitude that shaped the life of Dick Proenneke on this unforgettable fly-in adventure to Lake Clark National Park.

Your journey begins at our office on Lake Hood in Anchorage, where you’ll meet your pilot and embark on a breathtaking scenic flight through the legendary Lake Clark Pass, often hailed as the most reliable mountain gateway to the wilderness of Western Alaska. Prepare to be awestruck as we navigate through towering peaks, offering unparalleled views of the dramatic landscapes, including glaciers and Cook Inlet.

Emerging from the pass, your pilot will touch down on the turquoise waters of Twin Lakes. It’s here, on the shores of Upper Twin Lake, that Dick Proenneke built his iconic cabin and lived a life of self-reliance.

While details of his life and cabin are fascinating, our focus on this tour is experiencing the journey and Proenneke’s profound connection to this place. To witness the grandeur of Lake Clark National Park is alone worth the trip. We will land near the cabin, allowing approximately 1.5 hours on the ground for you to soak in the atmosphere, photograph the surroundings, and imagine the independent spirit that thrived here.

Please note: During the summer months, Lake Clark National Park often staffs the cabin site with rangers who may offer guided tours, sharing insight into Proenneke’s life and craftsmanship. We highly recommend taking advantage of this opportunity if available. However, a ranger presence and tours are not guaranteed, and your visit may coincide with a time when no staff are on-site. Even without rangers, the cabin and its surroundings still offer a meaningful connection to his legacy. Please also note that the cabin itself may be closed and inaccessible for interior viewing, regardless of ranger availability.

This tour offers a unique opportunity to witness the grandeur of Alaska, from its expansive landscapes to the very ground in Lake Clark National Park which inspired a testament to simple living. Book your adventure today and discover the magic of Proenneke’s Alaska!

Check in: Please check in at our Lake Hood Office 30 minutes prior to departure. For safety of weight and balance of the plane, we will need accurate weights of individuals or of the entire group.

What to bring: Sunglasses, bug spray, camera and binoculars. Dress comfortably and in layers; Alaska weather can change dramatically. A sunny and warm day in Anchorage can turn windy, rainy, and cool in the National Park. Please bring prescription medications.

Other information:

Lake Clark National Park is a remote wilderness accessible only by aircraft, meaning typical services are unavailable. Please ensure you bring all essential personal medications in the unlikely chance weather moves in causing a delayed return flight.

Due to the reliance on favorable weather for flights, we strongly advise against booking connecting commercial flights or other tours on the same day your Lake Clark trip is scheduled. If visiting the national park is the reason for your visit, please allow flexibility in your itinerary for potential weather delays and rescheduling.

Trips are subject to cancellation due to weather. Should this occur, we do our best to try to0 reschedule your tour. If rescheduling isn’t feasible, you’ll have the option of an alternative available tour or a full refund.

Finally, we highly recommend travel insurance to protect your investment, particularly if you might need to cancel for personal reasons close to your departure date.
