Other Important Information
- You will need an AK fishing license. You can purchase from your phone or computer. Please visit the Alaska Department of Fish and Game online store to purchase.
- You will need to familiarize yourself or have knowledge of the AK fishing regulations.
- Dress in layers and plan for inclement weather. Even Alaskans plan for cool windy weather on the water in the summertime bring hats, gloves, and wear multiple layers of clothing.
- Bring a lunch, snacks, beverages, bug repellent and sunscreen.
- You must bring either hip boots or chest waders, fishing gear including rod, reel and tackle.
- If you wish to bring fish back with you on the plane, you should bring trash bags to transport the fish as large coolers cannot be accommodated.
- Rust’s would be happy to refer you to a local company for processing and shipping.
- We do not often cancel for weather since it is a short easy flight over to the fishing areas. If we need to cancel for weather, we will try to reschedule. If your schedule can not accommodate a new date, we will refund your money.
- Firearms must be declared and unloaded
- Bear spray must be declared and packaged separately

Your unguided fly-in fishing trip includes:
- Seaplane flight to your destination (Alexander Lake or Bulchitna Lake)
- Courtesy shuttle from the Anchorage airport and many Anchorage hotels
- The best seat in the house! All passengers get a window seat and 2-way headset
- Wildlife watching. It is not uncommon to spot bear and moose in route
- Knowledge (and personality) of an Alaska bush pilot
- Rust’s meticulous attention to comfort and safety

Unguided Fishing FAQ
What can I expect once in the field?
We will provide the float plane transportation to and from your destination. You should prepared to be self-sufficient once in the field. At Alexander Lake two boats and motors are available which can accommodate 3-4 people each.
What can I catch?
From the Bulchitna Lake drop-off (via a short hike to Lake Creek) you can fish for salmon, rainbow trout, and grayling. At Alexander lake you can fish for northern pike.
Where can I purchase a fishing license?
It is easier than ever to get a license. Please visit the Alaska Department of Fish and Game online store to purchase.
How long is the flight?
Approximately 35 minutes.
Can I keep my catch?
Dependent on species, season, and current regulations, some dates are catch-and-release only. Inquire for more information.
What do I do with my fish at the end of the day?
If you wish to bring fish back with you on the plane, you should bring trash bags to transport the fish as large coolers cannot be accommodated. For further packaging, processing and shipping, we can assist.

King salmon fishing is closed for the 2024 season (for all locations Rust’s operates). For more details visit Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
Fishing for other species still available during King season. These include, trout, arctic grayling, northern pike and other salmon species. Please refer to fishing chart or contact our office for more details.
Rust’s Alaska Unguided Fly in Fishing Trips
Fish for salmon, trout, grayling, or pike on a backcountry excursion. Rust’s will fly you there and pick both you and your fish up at the end of the day. This is a do-it-yourself fishing trip for those have experience in Alaska; you will have to bring your own gear.
